Nov. 11 is Veterans Day and, in the context of the recently concluded tumultuous election season, I thought it particularly appropriate to recognize the supreme sacrifice of all military personnel from our six branches of service during the nearly 250 years of America’s existence. Our veterans have sacrificed so very much – indeed, sometimes ALL – to make America the great and successful democracy we are fortunate to celebrate today.
- Thank you, current and retired U.S. Army. The oldest branch of the U.S. military’s motto is “This We’ll Defend.”
- Thank you, current and retired U.S. Marine Corps. “Semper Fidelis,” or “Semper Fi,” Latin for “always faithful” represents this branch.
- Thank you, current and retired U.S. Navy. Sources say there is no official motto for this branch of service, however “Non sibi sed patriae” is inscribed above the chapel doors of the Annapolis U.S. Naval Academy. Beyond “not self, but country,” other opinions for the Navy’s motto include “Anchors Aweigh” (the unofficial song of the Navy) and “Semper Fortis” (always courageous).
- Thank you, U.S. Air Force. “Aim High … Fly-Fight-Win” represents a goal and a promise.
- Thank you, U.S. Coast Guard. “Semper Paratus” or “always ready” represents the military branch responsible for ocean rescues.
- Thank you, U.S. Space Force. The newest branch of the military has roots in the U.S. Air Force and its motto “Semper Supra,” or “always above,” indicates the charge to protect U.S. satellites and international space.
In my gratitude, I’m reminded that freedom is most definitely not free. The Blue Wagon team is proud to celebrate all current and retired veterans today and every day.
